The South Shore Has a Salt Problem
Every coastal MA town — Quincy, Weymouth, Braintree, Hingham, and the rest of the South Shore — is fighting the same fight: airborne sodium chloride. Salt accelerates paint failure on south- and east-facing walls by 30–50% versus inland Middlesex County. If your painter doesn’t spec for it, you’ll be repainting in year four.
Quincy (02169, 02170, 02171) — Wollaston to Squantum
Quincy homes in Wollaston Beach, Houghs Neck, Squantum, and Adams Shore face direct ocean exposure. We power-wash with a mildewcide-and-salt-flush solution, then spot-prime every bare-wood area with Sherwin-Williams Loxon XP (engineered for high-salt coastal). Typical Quincy exterior: $8,500–$15,000. See the Quincy painters page.
Weymouth (02188, 02189, 02190, 02191) — All Four Weymouths
From North Weymouth’s Wessagusset Beach colonials to South Weymouth’s Union Point new construction, scope varies wildly. Older North Weymouth needs full lead-safe prep; newer South Weymouth construction needs fiber-cement-rated primer. Typical Weymouth exterior: $8,000–$14,000. Detail on the Weymouth house painting page.
Braintree (02184) — Inland but Still Salty
Braintree sits a few miles inland but still gets coastal weather off the bay. Common housing: 1950s–1970s ranches and colonials in South Braintree, East Braintree, and Braintree Highlands. Cedar shakes are common — we hand-stain with Cabot Solid Color (acrylic, not oil) for 7–10 year life. Typical Braintree exterior: $7,500–$13,500. See the Braintree painters page.
Hingham (02043) — Historic District + Coastal Exposure
Hingham’s Hingham Center and Lincoln Historic District require Hingham Historical Commission review for exterior changes. Combine that with Hingham Harbor salt air and you get our most technical jobs. We use Benjamin Moore Historical Collection (pre-approved palette) and Aura Exterior — the only finish we’ve seen hold 7+ years on Crow Point. Typical Hingham exterior: $11,000–$19,500. See the Hingham painters page.

Timing Matters on the Coast
Best months to paint exterior on the South Shore: late May through early October. We avoid the September nor’easter window and never paint with humidity above 85%. Most South Shore jobs book 3–5 weeks out in peak season.
